The Softness of the Heart in Light of Islam

In our lives, we put immense effort into our outward appearance—our clothing, our speech, and the way we present ourselves. We memorize grand words, refine our expressions, and polish our external image. But how often do we focus on purifying our hearts? The reality is that without a pure heart, our external efforts are meaningless in the sight of ALLAH ﷻ.

Imagine a glass with just a little impurity. Even if it is cleaned, people may hesitate to drink from it because they have seen the impurity before. Likewise, if the heart is filled with filth—hatred, jealousy, envy, or arrogance—how can the love of ALLAH ﷻ reside in it? How can a person with such a heart attain closeness to ALLAH ﷻ?

The Harm of Jealousy, Hatred, and Division

A major problem in our societies today is that different groups, sects, and spiritual circles often see each other with suspicion. Instead of purifying their hearts, they focus on proving others wrong. True spirituality (Tasawwuf) teaches a person humility—believing that I am the one in need of reform, while the rest of the world is fine.

A great saint once advised a seeker, "Do not rush into following me. First, search the entire world. If you find someone better than me, follow them. But if you do not, then return to me." This wisdom teaches us to avoid self-righteousness and remain humble in our spiritual journey.

The Example of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ praised his companion Zayd ibn Haritha (RA), saying that his heart was filled with the light of Iman (faith). Once, the Prophet ﷺ asked him how he had started his day, and he replied, "I woke up as a firm believer." When asked for proof, he said, "Gold and dust are the same to me. Whether I have wealth or not, it makes no difference to me. I see the people of Jannah entering Jannah and the people of Hell entering Hell."

This deep level of Iman does not come merely from knowledge but from a heart purified by righteousness and sincerity. When a person's heart is filled with Iman, ALLAH ﷻ grants them inner knowledge (Ilm Ladunni). However, this knowledge is reserved for those who are mindful of their actions—those who avoid haram, guard their eyes and tongues, and remain conscious of ALLAH ﷻ at all times.

The Story of a Man of Jannah

Once, the Prophet ﷺ declared, "A man from among the people of Jannah is about to enter." A simple man walked in, carrying his shoes under his arms, his beard dripping with the water of ablution. This happened for three consecutive days.

Abdullah ibn Umar (RA), eager to learn what made this man so special, stayed with him for three days. However, he observed nothing extraordinary—no excessive prayers or fasting. Finally, he asked, "What is it that makes you so special?" The man replied, "Since the day I embraced Islam, I have never held jealousy or hatred against anyone in my heart."

This simple quality—keeping the heart clean from ill feelings—was what elevated him to the status of a person of Jannah.

True Signs of a Believer

ALLAH ﷻ describes the true believers in the Quran:

1. Their hearts tremble at the remembrance of ALLAH ﷻ.

2. Their faith increases when they hear the Quran.

3. They put their complete trust in ALLAH ﷻ.

4. They establish prayer with sincerity.

5. They spend in the way of ALLAH ﷻ from whatever He has given them.

These are the qualities we must strive for in our lives.

The Dangers of Holding Grudges

One of the greatest signs of a corrupt heart is feeling happiness at someone else's downfall. If we rejoice when someone suffers a loss, falls ill, or faces hardship, it is a sign that our heart is spiritually dead. The Prophet ﷺ warned that if a person reminds someone of their past sins after they have repented, ALLAH ﷻ may punish them by making them fall into the same sin before their death.

Similarly, if we forgive someone but later bring up past mistakes during a new conflict, it means we never truly forgave them in the first place. True forgiveness means erasing the matter from our hearts and moving forward with sincerity.

Conclusion

The path to spiritual success lies in purifying our hearts. Our true status with ALLAH ﷻ is not only determined by wealth, knowledge, or external appearance—it is based on the sincerity, humility, and purity of our hearts. Let us strive to remove jealousy, hatred, and arrogance from within and fill our hearts with love, gratitude, and trust in ALLAH ﷻ. Only then can we truly attain closeness to Him.

May ALLAH ﷻ purify our hearts and make us among those who are granted Jannah due to the sincerity of their Iman.
